ARISTIDE MAILLOL

Art

Aristide Maillo was born in 1861, he came to sculpture at the age of 35 and was a member of the Nabi with Bonnard, Roussel and Vuillard. Rodin hailed Maillol as “le genie de la sculpture” after seeing and purchasing his work at Maillol’s first solo exhibition from Vollard’s gallery in 1902. Thereafter on more than one occasion, Rodin included Maillol’s work in the Salon exhibitions of which he was a judge.
The French State commissioned the first of many public monuments from the artist in 1923 and today one can see numerous examples of his sculpture in the gardens of the Musée du Louvre and the Carrousel, Paris. In addition to the Musée Maillol, Paris, many of the most important museums in the world count Maillol’s work among the highlights of their collections, including the National Gallery of Australia; the Fogg Art Museum; Guggenheim Museum; The Hermitage; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; The National Gallery of Art, Washington; Neue Pinakothek, Munich and the Tate Gallery.

The Musée Maillol is housed in a complex of 18th-century buildings on the Rue de Grenelle, the four-story, light-filled museum exhibits a full range of the artist's work as well as works by his contemporaries and friends, including Matisse, Bonnard and Gauguin.
