KATHE KOLLWITZ

Biography

Kathe Kollwitz was an expressionist of the first half of the twentieth century. Her subject matter mainly dealt with the effects of war as she tried to come to terms with her grief for her son, who was killed in the First World War and her grandson who was killed in the Second World War. Her work and etchings in particular have an incredable emotional impact and expressiveness of form and gesture. She has inspired many artists since and much of her work is based at the Kathe Kollwitz Museum in Munich. http://www.dhm.de/museen/kollwitz/english/home.htm
